QUALIA: // ˈkwälēə // internal and subjective component of sense perceptions, arising from stimulation of the senses by phenomena.

Qualia, a project brought to HB design by a discerning and contemplative client, was crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The client's approach was to first name the project and let that be the inspiration for his team of professionals. His refined demeanour conveyed to us the overall brief for how he envisioned the project: timeless, elegant, luxurious, and calming, a modern west coast classic nestled amongst Arbutus trees and rockery with an outlook to a beautiful bay off the Strait of Georgia.

We began the design with the two-story entrance hall, which presented a formal introduction to the home. Rich walnut wood wall panelling designed in a classic style paired with flush details added modernity to the traditional space. Crystal-cut linear wall scones, a marble fireplace, and an aged brass ringed light fixture hover above an impressive and colourful silk and wool rug. Paired with a classic Vladimir Kagan-inspired settee, this room sets the tone that you are entering something special - the first glimpse of sensory stimulation.

Upon further exploration of the home, one will find warm cabinetry in impeccably matched walnut panels. Aged bronze detailing accentuates the curved kitchen hood fan and lines the marble patterns in the floor and fireplace marble. The staircase, a curved cascading structure of wood, bronze, and glass, ascends to the bedroom floor, which is connected by a bridge that passes over the elegant entry hall. The stairs then descend to the lower floor, home to the golf simulation room, gym, large home office, and additional functional spaces.

The furniture was carefully selected for its classic aesthetic and accentuated with rich jewel-toned fabrics. Silk wallpaper, mohair, velvets, fine thread wools, and silk-infused rugs all add to the sensory experience of this home. No detail was left untouched in this house. It was a 6-year labour of love by the entire team, all driven by our client's unwavering belief in the splendour of this home.
