When our clients first approached us with their beloved Eagle Island home, it was clear the project required a full-scale renovation after being neglected for many years. The prominent restauranteur and his family wanted to renew their cherished home, creating a legacy for their family to enjoy for generations to come. The directive was simple: to create an enduring, family-centric estate that could last the test of time, supporting their love of hosting and entertaining friends and their growing family.

One of the main requirements specified by the client was that everything had to be "bomb-proof." All the architectural finishes and soft furnishings had to be tough and lasting.

From the outset, we wanted to stay true to the original character of this rustic island home, respecting the beautiful, history-rich aura of this family heirloom. The home featured a bold stone and shingle-clad facade with warm heavy woods, reclaimed floors, and an eclectic assortment of lighting, artifacts, and furniture. We started by pulling out some of the hodgepodge renovations that had been added over the years, stripping the home back to its essentials. We refinished the original hardwood floors - a 100-year-old reclaimed fir from a decommissioned factory - in a deep chocolate brown, which became the primary colour inspiration for the trim and millwork palette.

We embraced the beautiful rich wood tones and heavy stone elements, adding complementary details of thick baseboards and window trims, coffered ceiling treatments, and linen wallcoverings paired with wood and metal cabinetry. These additions aimed to elevate the present rustic notes, tying in a marine-inspired palette of colours and textures to compliment the natural setting of the project. Oversized windows were installed to capture the serene surrounding landscape and bring in new light, while the addition of gorgeous, beamed ceiling detail in the grand living room added layers into what was previously a sizable but rather dull, unused space.

We cleverly addressed the bulletproof objective by specifying performance-grade upholstery fabric and indoor/outdoor-rated leathers and rugs. Some of the original furniture (including the ten-foot-long antique dining table) was either re-stained or re-purposed to fit the new aesthetic. We added durable metal detailing in high-traffic zones, such as the kitchen drawers, hardware, and kicks work, protecting against the wear of daily living. The home is now a functional space where they do not have to worry about a spill or a scratch.

We were honoured to have been part of creating this beautiful legacy home that will be cherished for generations to come. We look forward to hearing about all the happy memories this family will create in the next 30 years and beyond.
