When our clients purchased the Mouat house, originally designed by architect Hank Schubert in the early 1970s, they knew they were getting a piece of history. The renowned designer was recognized for his ability to methodically situate his projects on the land, seamlessly integrating them into their natural environment. In diminishing the barrier between inside and out, it was common for Shubert's projects to be constructed of wood and glass, allowing the spaces to be infused with an abundance of natural light.

While this original house had authentic and undeniably solid bones, after 50 years of use, it was clear the home required a thorough renovation. We began by stripping it back to the perimeter walls, adding new energy-efficient doors and windows, and reorganizing some of the floor plans to better suit the present family. We kept the materials and palette simple, clean, and soft to provide a backdrop to the home's stunning setting. Natural oak paired with sea-green tile, raw concrete countertop surfaces, and fabrics of linen, soft leather, and woven cane provided a bright and coastal ambience, requiring little maintenance.

The HB Design team managed architectural revisions and interiors in close collaboration with our clients and the on-site general contractor. This project was mainly handled remotely from within our office, with a few timely site visits to review the progress.

The result is a home that seamlessly blends vintage charm with modern elegance. Submerged in the serene setting of Salt Spring Island, this home demonstrates a profound understanding of the beauty behind building in harmony with the surrounding environment. Providing timeless style and functional design, it is a place where you feel relaxed and rejuvenated every time you step through the door. This project is a true treasure that will be cherished within the HB office for years to come.
